Where

Where did all the minutes and
hours go to, let alone the years
Why, just a few moments ago
I was seven and playing hide-and-seek
during a magical, endless summer,
and some of the best aspects
of me are still there
I see so many images,
emotions, and yesteryears
floating into my mind's eye,
and it occurs to me that time
is not a river, but an ocean,
unfathomably deep and
infinitely wide
You may wade or dive into it,
depending upon how deeply
you choose to experience
the memories of your past
And even if you submerge
yourself fully into these waters,
you never have to hit bottom,
unless you choose to do so
There are whirlpools, tides,
inlets to, and outlets from today
which lead to all your yesterdays
And what you choose to remember,
see, and feel from your past
colors your ocean's waters,
temperatures, moods,
and dispositions
Would not each of us
be healthier and happier
if we just accepted the lessons
we've learned from our most painful
and challenging experiences and trials,
while letting go of the actual causes
Why allow ourselves to be hounded by
the pain and suffering we have endured,
which only serves to harm and diminish us
But should we not also hold on
fervently to those memories which
brought us joy, playtime, friendship,
love, and some measure of wisdom,
for they are the foundations
of whom we've been
and whom we are,
as well as the guiding lights
which will help us to determine
whom we will become
Oh, I can feel the tug of my ocean,
and like the proverbial piece of driftwood,
I cannot deny that which I must do,
for there are places and people that I must
rediscover and experience with affection and love
